A bit of a confession: I’m kind of a cross between a hipster and a Hippie. I love weird, unique, ironic things, but mostly because I actually think they’re cool rather than as a put-on persona. I also love simple, happy, peaceful-like things because they make sense to me. This beer spoke to both of those sides – it’s a craft beer so it’s definitely unique, and it also sounded perfectly, happily Hippie approved.
Hazed and Infused? Come on.
Boulder claims this beer is named after its unfiltered, hazy look and it’s hop-infused goodness. As I drank it, I decided that it’s a good name, but for different reasons. First, let’s look at hazed.
Instead of hazed, I think this beer is a bit hazy. It’s not quite sure if it really is an American Pale Ale or not. The alcohol is a bit on the low-end for an APA, it’s a very thin beer, and while the flavors are good they’re not what I’ve come to expect from a pale ale. This haziness tends to make this beer a little forgettable and not one I’d actively seek out solely for the experience again.
A quick Google shows that infused means “permeated with something that usually alters for the better.” It became quickly apparent that this beer is permeated with balance. The flavor of this beer is awesome – lemony, crisp, effervescent with lots of carbonation, and hoppy – but it isn’t one of those in-your-face, over the top pale ales that beat you mercilessly about the tongue with hops or lots of alcohol. Instead, the flavors are muted, helping you to enjoy the overall experience of a smooth, easy drinking beer.
Because of the light, easy quality of this beer, it instantly made me think of summer. I imagine myself really enjoying this beer as a substitute for the watery crap that permeates most summertime backyard barbecues. It’s got way more flavor, but still definitely fits the “less filling” bill that makes a great summer drink. I’m not going to grab it off the shelf for its taste, I’m going to grab it for the experience.
DRINK IT WHEN: You’ve had a long, satisfying day of hard work outside.
BONUS! – use the bottle to soothe your sunburned neck or ironic farmer’s tan!
